Tree Tops floor lamp by Ron Arad for Zeus, 1984
The extraordinary Tree Tops floor lamp, designed by Ron Arad in 1984 and produced by Zeus, perfectly embodies Arad's experimental approach to design, blurring the boundaries between functional lighting and sculpture. Emerging from a large rounded concrete base, a slender black steel structure splits into two irregular arms, evoking branches and creating an expressive silhouette reminiscent of a tree. Each arm ends with a flexible gooseneck, allowing the light sources to be oriented and positioned at will. This combination of rigid steel and flexible elements gives the lamp a sense of movement, its appearance changing according to the position of the branches. The contrast between the raw, massive concrete base and the remarkable delicacy of the metal structure is characteristic of Arad's exploration of industrial materials. Despite its impressive height, its open construction gives it a light and graphic presence in an interior. Designed during the experimental period of Ron Arad's early career, the Tree Tops is a striking example of his unconventional approach to furniture and lighting. Its irregular geometry and apparent construction transform a functional floor lamp into a sculptural object.
