Mid-century buffet veneered in walnut and raised on angled legs, made in Central Europe around 1960. A Mid-Century Modern piece that sits between a dining room buffet and a living room storage unit, representative of post-war Central European furniture production in a modern key. In Central Europe during the 1950s and 1960s — Czechoslovakia, Poland, East Germany — an industry of high-quality furniture developed, adapting Scandinavian and Italian lines to workshop serial production. Buffets like this were designed as the centrepiece of the living-dining room: they housed crockery, table linen, glasses, and cutlery in a light volume, elevated off the ground to emphasise the horizontal nature of the piece. It is constructed on a solid wood frame veneered in walnut, with a multi-body front resolved in a strongly figured wood and a bookmatched veneer — two sheets of veneer in symmetrical mirror image, a characteristic feature of Mid-Century design. The legs are angled, made of solid wood, joined to the body with visible dowels. The top is finished with a fine edge and a black border moulding that separates the body from the top. Details.
