Rare and sumptuous earthenware compote bowl of the delicious and well-known “fontanges” model in polychrome version. “Fontanges” is a model full of charm and history which began to be produced by the u&c (Utzschneider et cie) factory in Sarreguemines at the end of the 19th century. The dish we are offering you was produced between 1875 and 1900. The off-white earthenware is decorated with floral motifs. Although it does not bear the Fontanges brand, but only that of the U&C factory, there is no doubt about the model since we find its two characteristic elements: the main motif of the bouquet tied with a ribbon and the frieze specific to the edge. These patterns are made by multi-color transfer, which is much less common than the traditional burgundy/pink transfer of the model. The handles are hand painted. The name of the model refers to the Marquise de Fontanges, the last favorite of the Sun King, Louis XIV, who was of great beauty. She notably gave her name to a style of hairstyle which was very fashionable in European courts. Condition (see photos): No cracks. Note: a micro chip on the upper edge and three chips on the reverse invisible from above. Two small marks on the relief of one of the handles. A manufacturing defect on the dish. Part of the transfer did not take creating a gap in the middle of the main design. A slight stain of use on the foot. Marks of use on the reliefs of the dish.
