Monachella floor lamp by luigi caccia dominioni for azucena, italy 🇮🇹, 1953. La monachella goes up and down diligently along the stem, until it reaches exactly where its light is needed. It takes its name from the headdress of the nuns who calmly and serenely perform their functions, between work and prayer. The reference to the nuns does not stop only in the form, which we immediately find in the lampshade slightly tilted downwards. Luigi caccia dominioni was also inspired by the attitude of the nuns, with their discreet presence and downward look. The lamp seems to look with humility at what it has to illuminate: a book that is read, a special object, a particularly expensive corner that we want to highlight. The monachella "ora et labora" rises and falls diligently along the foot, until it reaches exactly where its light is needed. More than a simple reading lamp (as the extension of the stem states) we can interpret it as a real object of meditation. Monachella was designed in 1953, precisely in the years when caccia dominioni built the convent and institute of the beata vergine addolorata in milan, the residence of a religious order of women. Who knows that the inspiration for this object did not come precisely from the meetings between the architect and the clients of that work as solid as it is spiritual. Dimensions: 120cm X 16cm X 16cm. This is a 1990’s version and from then is out of production. Mint condition! Please ask me about shipping costs before buy! Thanks!.
