Vintage Franz Kriwanek Silverton mountain pottery stoneware vase

Stoneware vase by ceramicist Franz Kriwanek (1920-1994). This artist, born in Czechoslovakia, emigrated to the United States in 1952 to escape the dictatorship. He founded his company, Silverton Mountain Pottery, in Colorado to produce art ceramics and teach pottery. The stoneware vase is made with clay found in the Silverton area. The smooth yet textured glaze is made using a mixture of cotton ginners' ash, which brings out the vase's blue-gray finish. It bears the original pottery sticker on the top of the vase and Franz Kriwanek's signature, "kri, " is impressed on the base. Created in the 1980s.
