Monumental and highly collectible lidded vase by Aldo Londi for Bitossi, handcrafted in Italy circa 1960s. Executed in the house’s signature chamotte stoneware, this exceptional large-scale example features a deep black glazed body with sgrafitto decoration revealing vivid cobalt blue beneath the incised surface. The vase is further enhanced by two striking bands and a sculptural lid executed in the iconic Rimini Blu glaze, richly decorated with hand-incised geometric and neolithic-inspired motifs so closely associated with Londi’s celebrated Mid-Century production. The primitive graphic vocabulary and textured surface exemplify the balance of artisanal craftsmanship and modernist design that made Bitossi internationally renowned during Londi’s tenure as artistic director from 1946–1976. A rare monumental form with exceptional visual presence, the piece displays beautifully in person, with substantial weight and remarkable glaze depth throughout.
