Counter from the 1920s

Antique solid oak trade counter, France, circa 1910–1920. Although seemingly predating the major decorative movements of the 1930s, this piece already hints at certain explorations that would characterise French furniture of the interwar period. The softness of its volumes and the fluidity of its curves evoke, with several decades' foresight, the early works of Jean Royère, as he develops a language where cabinetry becomes almost sculpture. The interior retains its original organisation: drawers, compartments, storage niches, and a work surface testify to a design where every detail serves a specific purpose. This sincere construction, entirely conceived around function, contributes to its profoundly contemporary character today. The piece bears the marks of over a century of use: wear, previous restorations, and slight stabilised shrinkage cracks. The whole has been renovated with care to preserve the richness of its patina and the authenticity of its history. Originally designed for a shop, this counter now naturally finds its place as a kitchen island, entrance furniture, desk, gallery counter, or boutique display. Its architectural presence is sufficient to structure a space while maintaining the sobriety and nobility characteristic of fine trade furniture. In good condition.
