This is THE quintessential Parisian bistro armchair (and one from other cities!) from the first half of the 20th century! Made of woven wicker, with flat strands in red or natural color. No plastic strands like on later armchairs. The frame appears to be made of bent bamboo. But obviously, decades of use have taken their toll… When I found it at a flea market, it was still sturdy, but many strands were broken. But I couldn't resist giving it a new lease on life. So I carefully dusted it off, then I "filled in" the gaps. I didn't do basketry in the true sense of the word; I didn't completely replace the broken strands, but I inserted and wove pieces of wicker salvaged from an unsalvageable armchair, then painted the sections that filled the gaps in red (a slightly different shade of red). The patina isn't uniform across all the strands, of course, but the chair has regained a presentable appearance, and you'll have the satisfaction of having saved a piece of heritage! And the great thing about these antique chairs is that you can always entrust it to a basket maker in a few years if necessary; it's practically infinitely repairable! It's therefore sturdy (it had already been reinforced with the addition of thin, twisted wire, unless that was original?), but it bears the patina of time, my repairs, and there are certainly still a few damaged, frayed strands. It measures approximately 75.5 cm at its highest point, 56 cm at its widest, and 63 cm at its deepest; the seat height is 42 cm.
