Sofa by Arne Hovmand-Olsen, Denmark, 1960s

Danish teak sofa with removable cushions recently reupholstered in light fabric. Original “Made in Denmark – Design Hovmand-Olsen” mark, 1960s. The teak structure of this sofa by Arne Hovmand-Olsen combines remarkable formal clarity with a surprisingly dynamic design. The angle of the backrest meets the opposing direction of the rear uprights, while the armrests introduce a further diagonal: an interplay of tensions that brings energy to the profile without compromising the lightness of the construction. It is precisely in this balance between the precision of the woodwork and the tension of the forms that Hovmand-Olsen’s training as a cabinetmaker emerges, reflecting his distinctive approach to Danish Modern and his particular interest in the expressive possibilities of structure. The removable cushions, recently reupholstered in a light-coloured fabric, leave this geometry fully visible.
