Superb large planter/cache-pot, an antique barbotine piece, English majolica, attributed to Joseph Holdcroft, circa 1870-1880. Slightly flared circular shape resting on four feet, featuring a beautiful naturalistic relief decoration of large water lily leaves, white flowers and buds on a brown background, in rich shades of green, with a pink/mauve glazed interior and yellow border. Drilled at the bottom for drainage and accompanied by its large matching saucer. The pot retains an old label from the Toulouse dealer Eugène Trapé, "crystals, porcelain and fancy objects, rue d’Alsace-Lorraine in Toulouse." Unsigned work, corresponding to the majolica productions of Joseph Holdcroft from the Victorian period. Maximum height of 26.5cm for the pot and saucer combined, approximately 21-22cm height for the pot alone without the feet, maximum diameter of 31cm, approximately 26.5-27cm inner diameter at the top, 39cm diameter for the saucer. The pot is in very good overall condition, with a slight external patina deposit that is not deeply ingrained. The plug present at the bottom of the pot is not airtight. The saucer has an old repair with staples across its width, with the crack remaining quite discreet. Approximately 4kg for the pot and 1.2kg for the saucer. Please note this item is not intended for outdoor use.
