Pair of Multipl's chairs by Joseph Mathieu 1940s Created in 1922 by the Lyon engineer Joseph Mathieu, the Multipl's chair is an iconic model in stamped metal, designed for the Société industrielle des meubles Multipl's. Initially intended for café terraces, public gardens and luxury restaurants, it quickly became popular in canteens and hospitals. Stackable, lightweight, durable and industrially produced, it supplanted curved wooden models like those of the Thonet brothers. Its technical and bold design, reminiscent of a Meccano set, earned it international recognition as early as 1928 at the Stuttgart exhibition. Frequently confused with Xavier Pauchard's A chair, it is distinguished by the concave shape of its legs. Its aesthetic even seduced artists like David Hockney, who incorporated it into his works.
