Marine Chest in Camphor

The top of this chest is made of a single plank of camphor wood, the corners and edges are protected by rounded brass plates called straps. The front, sides and back are also made of a single camphor wood board. The lid opens using two recessed brass boat handles, and is held open by a brass compass called “knee”. On each side we see bronze carrying handles. This chest, used in the 19th century to transport the personal effects of naval officers, has a large storage capacity.
