Painting painting manolis calliyannis 1955. Subject: abstract composition. Manolis calliyannis (lesbos 1923-2010) was a greek painter, he participates in the abstract painting current of the second school of paris. From the mid-fifties his painting became figurative and he devoted himself to landscape. Calliyannis was a navigator for the r.a.f. During the second world war, and moved to paris in 1947. There he met serge poliakoff and nicolas de staël. He also befriended the greek art historian christian zervos, and the greek writer and patron tériade. In the sixties he exhibited in new york with the pierre matisse gallery. He settled in the south of france, then returned to his native island of lesvos as curator of the tériade museum from 1987. Works by manolis calliyannis can be found at the musée tériade in lesvos, at the tate gallery in london, at the musée d'art moderne de la ville de paris.
