A circa early 19th Century Welsh primitive vernacular stick back hedge chair of mixed wood construction. The legs have been historically changed. The chair is formed with a shaped plank seat and a gently curved crest rail, carved with simple linear and punched decoration. Turned stick back spindles rise from the seat into the rail, each with characteristic variation, giving the piece a strong handmade quality. The seat retains good colour and surface, with visible grain, wear and historic marks consistent with age and use. Raised on simple turned legs united by stretchers. The legs have been historically replaced, a practical and honest repair that does not detract from the overall integrity or use of the chair. A well-balanced example with a sculptural silhouette, suitable as a standalone piece or occasional seating. Condition in line with age — surface wear, minor historic marks and repairs. Structurally sound.
