A true autodidact, he never underwent formal design training. During his childhood, he was obsessively dedicated to music, drawing, painting, and especially woodcarving. Inspired by the historical furniture exhibits at the Röhsska Museum of Design and Craft in Gothenburg, Ekström increasingly focused on furniture making as a young adult. In 1944, together with his brother Jerker, he founded the successful furniture factory "ESE-möbler" (which later became Swedese AB). The brothers pioneered the revolutionary idea of offering flat-packed furniture for easy transport and self-assembly. These flat packages were shipped with matching hex keys—a concept that IKEA would later adopt to establish its global empire. While Ekström's most famous design is the iconic Lamino Chair from 1956, the Primo Chair offered here was designed in 1980. It represents a beautiful visual and functional evolution of the legendary Lamino, replacing the sheepskin with a distinct, woven webbing while retaining the same masterfully bent wood frame. Ekström worked within his company until his passing in 1988. Today, his iconic designs are featured in the permanent exhibitions of major museums worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1999, the Swedish interior magazine Sköna Hem honored his pioneering Lamino design with the prestigious title "Best Swedish Furniture Design of the 20th Century.
