Vintage convex witch mirror – carved gilded wood – 1960s

Magnificent convex witch mirror from the 1960s, made of carved and gilded wood, in excellent condition. A particularly decorative piece due to its richly carved frame, fully animated with scrolls, twists, and openwork floral motifs. The gilding presents beautiful contrasts between the brighter gilded areas and the darker zones, giving the relief a remarkable depth. The edge of the mirror itself is adorned with a delicate beaded frieze that perfectly highlights the circular shape. But beyond its aesthetics, this mirror has a genuine functional peculiarity: its convex mirror offers a much wider field of vision than a classic mirror. This shape once allowed for discreetly monitoring an entire room or shop, particularly from a counter, by catching sight of what was happening behind oneself. It is this ability to "see everywhere" that explains its designation as a witch mirror. In shops, it could notably serve to keep an eye on the sales area and limit the risk of theft. A particularly ingenious surveillance function for a time when video surveillance systems obviously did not exist! The mirror is particularly interesting here as the convexity is clearly visible in the reflection: the lines of the room curve and the image widens, truly giving that impression of panoramic vision.
