Console or sideboard in Scandinavian design made of blonde mahogany. Model 648 by designer Josef Frank. Period model!!! (this is not a current reissue that can be found at Svenskt Tenn where there is a signature in pyrography). Signs of wear are present. The "library table" features a strict and timeless shape with slightly raised edges. Josef Frank was likely inspired by China and Japan for this piece. The table is particularly suited for magazines and books, which is why it has been called a library table. Josef Frank grew up in Vienna and studied architecture at the Kunstgewerbeschule. In the 1920s, he designed housing estates and large residential buildings built around communal courtyards in a Vienna facing a severe housing shortage. In 1925, he founded the interior design agency Haus & Garten with his fellow architects Oskar Wlach and Walther Sobotka. Svenskt Tenn engaged Josef Frank in 1934, and a few years later, he and Estrid Ericson made their international breakthrough. Even though he was already 50 when he left the rising Nazism in Vienna for Sweden, Frank is considered one of the most important Swedish designers.
