This pretty tankard in “salt stoneware” from alsace, which will also serve perfectly as a cup, comes from one of the last family potteries still in operation in the renowned village of betschdorf, the fortuné schmitter pottery which was taken over on last year by luce schmitter, representative of the 7th generation! I contacted her to date this mug, and she responded very kindly. Indeed, this cup is signed underneath, by hand, hollowed out in the material, “fortuné schmitter et fils, betschdorf”, which allowed him to give me valuable information that I am providing to you here: this cup was signed by her grandmother and it is most likely from the 60s. So she is around 60 years old and doesn't do them! Just two tiny chips, almost invisible on the edge and small marks on the handle but which are original (small burst air bubbles). She also told me that natural salt vitrification makes salt stoneware pottery the best for conservation and food contact, the salt acts like a thin layer of waterproof and unalterable glass. This cup has a harmonious rounded shape reminiscent of a barrel, a plant decoration representing a branch of green hops, and also obviously the magnificent cobalt blue color on the handle, a handle which is quite large and therefore allows for easy gripping...it measures 9 cm in height, approximately 9 cm in diameter and 14 cm in width including the handle. I offer other stoneware from alsace (cups, bowl, pitcher, click on “see the store”) which will delight collectors and lovers of beautiful, quality traditional ceramics. If you wish to order several, do not hesitate to contact me via messaging before ordering so that I can adjust the shipping costs for combined shipping.
