Oil painting on cardboard by Georges Lattès depicting the interior of a courtyard. The artist's signature is present at the bottom right. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Marianne, a member of Georges Armand Lattès's family, for her trust and for entrusting us with the artist's studio collection. We now invite you to enjoy these lines written with intimacy by Marianne. Georges Lattès, or the painter of memory. The boxer with a broken nose, the dancer from tea salons, the banjo and piano player, charm on his lips, the painter of Paris but also of tides and meadows is a man we love. From these free spirits, where only the heart has its reasons. The neighborhoods of Paris that were his, but also those of Edith Piaf, Yves Montand, or Cocteau, the painter captured their entire atmosphere. By painting these facades, these characters, these colors, we hear the songs of Maurice Chevalier, which he loved to sing with family. It is even said that he resembled him: "A handsome man, very Parisian!" We discover in his works the small trades of neighborhoods, the inhabitants and their habits, we smile at the sight of old automobiles, we are touched by a sign, we try to guess a street. From his life on car circuits or boxing rings, to dancing in tea salons and cycling through the countryside, Georges Lattès created his work: a sensitive, just, endearing testimony of a bygone France. From the harvests where plows pulled by horses move slowly and surely in the heat and silence of summer, to the autumn plowing of dark and promising soil, from paths crossing apple orchards to fields of white cotton flowers, the painter gently guides our gaze. From fields to factories, from countryside to city, from the rippling waters of the Seine flowing through fields to this wide gray river crossing the capital, our eyes rest now on a boat, now on heavily loaded barges. From the hills of Barbizon to those of Normandy, he captures the tenderness of colors and shapes, each season stimulating his palette. This Parisian at heart, so sensitive to the work of men and the land, leads us through his canvases across our country and our history. Georges Lattès offers us the visual memory of an era, the smile of a memory, the tenderness of a gaze. On his easel, placed according to his desires, he has drawn his view of the world on his canvases. Then, at his home on Rue Pierre Sémart in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, the paintings we discover today were born.
