"Ancient Chinese side tables are made of red elm (jumu) and were used as stools or side tables in the 19th century. Their style is typical of the Jiangsu province, where red elm is the predominant wood." I note a crack in the wood on the top surface, see photo, the only defect noticed. On the frame, a wax seal bearing the inscription "PERMISSION" and a number is affixed. This may be an official export permit, a museum inventory, or a confirmation of authorship. These seals were often used in the mid-20th century to mark decorative objects passing through customs or cultural institutions. A magnificent piece.
