This marine painting, signed by Jean-Paul Guinegault, captures a suspended moment on a peaceful coast at low tide. Three fishing boats rest on a muddy shore. One of them dominates the foreground, slightly tilted as if surrendering to rest, while the others blend into the background. The composition is understated, almost meditative: a distant horizon, a flat expanse, and a pale sky with bluish hues that envelops the scene in a soft and melancholic atmosphere. The colours are deliberately muted, as if to emphasise the tranquility of the moment and the stillness of the vessels. Nothing moves; everything seems to be waiting — for the return of the sea, the next departure, or simply the passage of time. This painting evokes the solitude of deserted ports, the beauty of ordinary moments, and the discreet poetry of the maritime world. It invites contemplation and listening to silence. Jean-Paul Guinegault was a French painter born in Paris in 1918, the son of the painter Georges Guinegault. Trained by Louis Roger and René Jaudon, he developed a figurative style sensitive to light and local atmospheres. He settled in Angers in 1950, where he led a peaceful life and dedicated his art to French landscapes: Atlantic ports, flower-filled alleys, Breton mills, and intimate scenes. A member of the Indépendants and the French Artists, he regularly exhibited in Paris, Burgundy, and Charente-Maritime. His work, imbued with softness and poetry, reflects a contemplative gaze on the world. He passed away in 2009, leaving behind a sincere and luminous body of work.
