This rare pair of "J." armchairs represents an icon of postmodernism from the 1980s. Designed by Philippe Starck in 1984 for the legendary "Lang" collection, these armchairs were produced by Aleph (the prestige division of Driade) from 1987 onwards. A masterpiece of sculptural furniture, this model is part of the permanent collection at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Authenticity and condition: These two examples are original first-generation editions, featuring the authentic signature "Aleph by Starck" engraved on the rear tripod legs made of cast aluminium. They are preserved in exceptional vintage condition, with their original high-quality grained black leather. The leather of both armchairs is remarkably supple, the stitching is neat and tight, and it exhibits a beautiful natural patina. Finding a matching pair in such well-preserved original condition is increasingly rare for discerning collectors. Design period: 1984 (Edition around 1987) Materials: Polished cast aluminium, tubular steel, original grained leather. About the designer: Philippe Starck. Philippe Starck (born in 1949) is undoubtedly the most influential French designer of the late 20th century. Known for his radical approach to forms, Starck gained international fame in the 1980s. His collaborations with Italian design houses such as Driade and Aleph remain his most sought-after period, characterised by a unique blend of sculptural curves, industrial materials, and bold postmodernism. About the manufacturer: Aleph (Driade) Founded as the "laboratory" division of the Italian house Driade, Aleph was created to produce the most avant-garde and high-end designs of the 1980s. While Driade handled large-scale production, Aleph focused on limited or specialised editions from renowned designers such as Starck and Borek Šípek.
