This small antique chest, painted in pine wood, features a blue-green greyed background with natural wear and a removable interior shelf made of bare wood. The lid opens with top hinges and has a simple closure. It originates from Poland, from the first half of the 20th century, where the pine was crafted using a mortise and tenon joint and finished with domestic oil paint. In rural homes of Central Eastern Europe, small chests like this were used to store personal items, small tools, or documents. The paint applied in thin layers on the pine and the compartmentalised interior shelf belong to the peasant domestic register, where the piece served a purely utilitarian function before becoming decorative. The body is constructed from solid pine. The structure is a closed rectangular volume with a drop-down lid, assembled using mortise and tenon joints on an internal frame. Inside, a removable unpainted pine shelf rests on two horizontal crosspieces. The front hinge and closure are made of wrought iron. Details. Dimensions: Length 55 cm – Depth 32 cm – Height 30 cm.
