Plaster bust of Madame Du Barry, mistress of King Louis XV. It was executed by Augustin Pajou in 1773. It is a 19th-century plaster reproduction, with a superb original patina. One of the most famous busts in French history, the original is now in the Louvre: "Commissioned by Mme Du Barry probably in 1772, as it was nearing completion in the spring of 1773. Salon of 1773, no. 197. Paid for in 1777. In the salon of the Château de Louveciennes, June 1774, then placed in the Pavillon Neuf. Cited in the salon of the Château de Louveciennes in the inventory of June 1774, then in the Pavillon Neuf according to the inventory begun on March 6, 1793. Revolutionary seizure, February 17-18, 1793. Inventoried in 1824 in the stores of the Château de Versailles. Placed on November 22, 1838 in the historic galleries of the Château de Versailles. Entered the Louvre before 1855." Our copy, marked DU BARRY and PAJOU on the back, is in superb condition. Some signs of wear contribute to its authenticity. Placed on a fireplace or a small piece of furniture, this charming and gentle bust will bring a touch of femininity to your room... And a touch of French history. H: 45 cm. W: 31 cm. D: 15 cm.
