A large stoneware jug with a beige glaze and glossy black enamel decorated with five mascarons with men's heads on the rim and a mascaron under the spout. Signed Sylvain Sttublet intaglio under the base, with the mark 234 e (r) A slight chip on the nose of a mask. Period: circa 1940. Dimensions: height 41 cm, width 24 cm, weight 9 kg. Ref adequantik 2109765. Sylvain Sttublet (1890-1985), Belgian Art Deco ceramist, known for his beige and brown earthenware productions which depict mascarons, sometimes frightening masks whose original function would be to ward off evil spirits. He worked in close collaboration with another Belgian ceramist: Ernest Patris.
