Jean van Marcke de Lummen (1797-1849) mare with foal, from the early 1800s. Nice and small decorative oil painting on panel depicting a mare with foal. Signed lower left with Jean van Marcke, he was a Belgian painter born in Brussels and died in Liège. He was part of a well-known family of artists. He was the father of the famous cattle painter Émile van Marcke. Other family members, such as Edouard Jean van Marcke, were also active as artists. The painting is somewhat dirty and has developed craquelure over the centuries.
