Large ruby red cut crystal vase – Central Europe 1950s

Large floor vase in double-layered crystal (overlay technique), characteristic of the production from glassworks in Central and Eastern Europe – Bohemia – from the 1950s to 1970s. The body, slightly flared and cylindrical in shape, rests on a richly faceted massive octagonal base, with a star-shaped radiant bottom visible through transparency. The wheel-cut decoration is organised into two registers: the upper register features large multi-pointed stars, palmette and fan motifs, as well as a remarkable six-pointed central star with an inner geometric rosette; the lower register displays smaller stars and engraved circular medallions. The neck is adorned with a characteristic frieze of festoons. The cut areas reveal the underlying colourless crystal, creating a striking contrast with the intense ruby red of the surface. Authenticity technique: the double-layered crystal (overlay) involves blowing a layer of coloured crystal over a colourless body, then wheel-cutting to reveal the two layers – a demanding artisanal process clearly visible on this piece.
