Biography (ref: sculpture in belgium from 1830 - engelen - marx; wikipedia): robert delnest (1904, mons – 1979, leeuw-saint-pierre). Sculptor and medallist, trained at the academy of mons under the direction of sculptors léon gobert and paul dubois (1919-1927), robert delnest distinguished himself by his mastery of monumental sculpture, notably stylized art deco. His early works are in the tradition of rodin and meunier before he evolved towards a modernist style. He excelled in direct stone carving, while also creating works in bronze (notably the compagnie de bronzes de bruxelles), such as maternité. His work adorns several public buildings, notably the maisons communal buildings of charleroi, quaregnon and binche, the building of the province of mons, as well as the north and south stations in brussels. He took drawing and sculpture classes at the academy of fine arts in mons from 1919 to 1927 and then studied ceramics at the institute of arts and crafts of hainaut. In 1954, he founded the group 'art et réalité' with edmond dufrunfaut, serge creuz, rik slabbinck roger sommeville, raymond coumans, louis tournay and paul van thienen.
