Set of 4 dining chairs in Directoire or late Empire style from the 19th or early 20th century. The banded backrest is slightly reclined backwards in a curved shape, a typical feature of French neoclassical furniture. The crossbar is pierced with a knot motif centred on a brass disc/rosette. The front legs are turned, fluted at the top, and taper to a spindle shape with brass caps at the base. The rear legs are sabre-shaped to ensure stability. The chair structure is made of solid cherry wood, featuring clean lines and elegant grain. The chairs are upholstered in emerald green or empire green velvet. Green was the preferred colour during the time of Napoleon and the Directoire. Roman numerals are engraved under the seat rail, which traditionally served to number chairs of the same series during their handcrafted production. The chairs are in good condition, sturdy with beautiful velvet. The chairs are sold as a set of 4 - the fifth is given to the buyer upon request. Width 48, depth 50, height 90/50.
