Superb and large oil on canvas from the 19th century representing a full-length portrait of a notable figure from the upper bourgeoisie during the Third Republic. The man, with a serene gaze and an expressive face, wears a ceremonial outfit of great sobriety: a dark suit, an impeccable white pleated shirt, and a black bow tie. A finely distinguished gold pocket watch chain is slipped between his crossed hands. The neutral gradient gray background beautifully highlights the psychology and presence of the model, a technique characteristic of the great academic portraitists of this period. Details of the work: • Artist: Chéri BREUILLET (19th century). A listed and valued French painter, several of whose works are preserved in national collections (notably at the Angoulême Museum). • Signature: Signed by the artist "Chéri BREUILLET" and dated "1876" at the bottom right. • Technique: Original oil on canvas. • Support: Mounted on its original key frame with corner braces. Period fixation by seeds (old forged nails), proof that it has never been altered or re-canvas. Dimensions: • Height: 94 cm. • Width: 74 cm. • (Standard period format: 30 Figure) Condition: Excellent structural condition for a 150-year-old work. The canvas is sound, well-stretched on its original frame, without tears or heavy restoration. The paint layer has a superb authentic old patina with slight signs of age, which adds to its historical charm. A rare antique piece due to its size and condition, ideal for adding character to a classic interior, a curiosity cabinet, or a "family home" style decoration.
