The building, which tradition identifies as an "oratory", is thus mainly attributed to the carolingian period, even though the historian, the art historian and the archaeologist have few sources to apprehend with certainty the church of the ninth century. Romantic literature, however, relied on a varied corpus of secondary sources to reread its history from a nationalist perspective, and helped to make germigny-des-prés an archaeological model, "the most precious landmark" for the study of carolingian times according to robert de lasteyrie.
