Painting landscape church germigny-des-prés 1854. Subject: genre scene in the countryside near the church of germigny-des-prés. The church of germigny-des-prés is a monument whose vision is still influenced today by the image and by the representations that scholars and architects of the nineteenth century elaborated. The building, which tradition identifies as an "oratory", is thus mainly attributed to the carolingian period, even though the historian, the art historian and the archaeologist have few sources to apprehend with certainty the church of the ninth century. Romantic literature, however, relied on a varied corpus of secondary sources to reread its history from a nationalist perspective, and helped to make germigny-des-prés an archaeological model, "the most precious landmark" for the study of carolingian times according to robert de lasteyrie. Support: mixed media on paper. Lead, ink, watercolor enhanced with gouache. Dimensions: 30 X 23.5 cm. Condition: good general condition (see photos) Period: 1854. Signature at the bottom left to decipher.
