This rare vintage Tuareg mat, handcrafted in Mauritania, is made of fine golden reed stalks, assembled with tightly bound dark threads. This structure creates a delicately ribbed surface that, under light, reveals warm hues reminiscent of honey and straw. Twelve "stepped" diamond patterns—rendered in red, black, and gold—are arranged in an airy grid across the piece; each is formed by a multitude of tiny stitching dots. Between these patterns, fine vertical bands made of braided and twisted cords (red, black, and gold) run the entire length of the mat, structuring the composition into regular and soothing columns. A dark leather border, softened and aged over time, frames the whole. Handmade using techniques passed down through generations by Saharan weavers, these mats traditionally served as durable and nomadic floor coverings in the desert; they were particularly valued for their lightness and great maneuverability, allowing them to be rolled up and transported easily.
