Printing series. By Rikke Diemer is based on original collages from 1981-82. Diemer started his career as a painter. His first works from the late 1960s were paintings inspired by his teacher at the academy, Richard Mortensen, one of Denmark's most influential and innovative abstract artists. Since the 1970s, photography has been at the heart of his work. In the 1980s, his photographic work introduced myths and iconography from the Inuit and ancient Greece, often with motifs of classical female sculptures, one of which is the goddess Athena. Diemer often produces his motifs in several editions and different media with colour variations. Playing with figure/ground relationships and colour interactions, Diemer presents the viewer with an archetypal female image that reflects the changing perspectives of different historical perceptions of women, conveying a multitude of dynamic and visual sensations and encouraging us to reflect on how idealized images of the female body measure up to the figures of real, living women. Diemers' work spans more than 40 years and explores the lives, dreams, myths and memories of a non-narrative structure based on association. Her photographs and collages are both heroically expansive and irreducibly simple.
