This small mahogany lady's writing desk, dating from the second half of the 19th century during the Napoleon III era, is an elegant piece crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The curved top is covered in new black leather with a gilt vignette, surrounded by a fluted molding that accentuates its edge. Just below, a large central drawer, decorated with foliate moldings and brass marquetry depicting vegetal scrolls, opens with an ornate key and a functional lock. The upper part of the desk is surmounted by a small beveled mirror, topped with a shelf featuring an openwork gallery. On either side, two small drawers with gilt bronze handles in the shape of acanthus leaves complete the ensemble. They, too, are topped with openwork galleries. Brass fillets and decorative friezes highlight the contours of the mirror and the drawers. The desk's elegantly curved legs are adorned with superb gilt-bronze mounts and terminate in vegetal motifs. This desk is a rare piece, a testament to French craftsmanship, evoking refinement and preciousness. ******* Period: Second half of the 19th century.
