Chirvan (chirvan carpet, or shirvan): hand-knotted carpets from the chirvan region of azerbaijan. The old chirvan carpets (pre-1925) are made entirely of wool, tinted with plant dyes, and the wool is spun by hand. Geometric patterns, such as eight-pointed stars, crosses and mir-e butha are common, as are stylized animals and humans. On these mats, the knotisting is dense, as is the drawing...they make good and solid carpets of common use.
