For sale: Mirto vase, designed by the master of post-modern design Ettore Sottsass for the Japanese manufacturer Marutomi, 1997. Piece signed and dated under the base. Co-founder of the Memphis Milano movement in 1981 and the most radical and influential figure in global post-modern design, Ettore Sottsass was one of the Italian designers commissioned by Marutomi to explore modern resin versions of urushi lacquer, a 9, 000-year-old traditional Japanese technique. The Mirto is its most poetic expression: its pure cylindrical shape, its blue-grey top disc, and its brick-brown base recall the deep earthy colours of traditional urushi pigments, dark vermilion, warm brown, translated here into Sottsass's formal and pop vocabulary. The meeting of East and West, tradition and provocation, in a single object. A rare piece on the collector's market, produced in a very limited series. Excellent overall condition.
