Presented here is a beautiful small Victorian Gothic Revival design table lamp made in England circa 1880s. The Gothic Revival style is an architectural and decorative style that originated in the mid-18th century in England. The arrival of Romanticism in art and literature at this time strongly influenced public enthusiasm for the Middle Ages, medieval arts, and the new aesthetic quality known as "picturesque." This antique lamp displays several design features of the era: the mythological griffins or winged lions, neoclassical decorative themes, elegant proportions and the right weight. The griffin is a mythological creature probably native to Egypt, with the body, hind legs and tail of a lion and the wings, front claws and head of an eagle. In this Victorian lamp, the heads are lions. As they can fly with superhuman strength, they are considered a symbol of power, wealth, courage and prestige. The elongated shape and delicate proportions make this lamp well-proportioned for a shelf, desk, bedside or mantelpiece. It would suit a range of interiors such as antique, art deco, traditional, country, Hollywood regency or contemporary. The design composition consists of a fine gilded and gilded quality cast pewter tripod base depicting three mythological griffins with lion faces. The wings extend upwards and become the lamp column leading to a new lamp holder covered with a new cream card candle tube. Neoclassical decorative motifs are present between the griffins, ending in a decorative finial at the bottom. The legs have new black felt underneath to protect the furniture underneath. The lamp is finished with a new quality clip-on cream silk candle shade. The shade is tapered and features wide pleats, complemented by crepe trim at the top and bottom. It is lined with the same color, which enhances the shine of the light. This lampshade is included in the price. The lamp carries 1 small standard screw bulb (e14) up to 40 watts.
