Roger Capron (1922-2006) Cylindrical suspension in glazed ceramic. Decorated with a frieze of stylised olive leaves and branches on a blue, green, and black background. Vallauris workshop, circa 1960. Signed inside and located in Vallauris. Diameter: 8cm. Height: 21.5cm. Very good condition, with a loss of glaze on one white leaf (photo 4), missing the original bamboo stem. *A major player in the golden age of Vallauris, he achieved the feat of marrying traditional artisanal craftsmanship with semi-industrial mass production, spreading modern style in the interiors of the Glorious Thirties. Born in Vincennes, he studied at the School of Applied Arts to Industry in Paris (1939-1943), where he was significantly influenced by his teacher, the decorator René Gabriel. There, he learned the importance of beauty for all and of series furniture. Attracted by the South, he settled in Vallauris in 1946 and partnered with Robert Picault and Jean Derval to found the Callis workshop. They revitalised traditional culinary pottery by introducing modern shapes. In 1952, Roger Capron created his own independent workshop. Awarded numerous international prizes (Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale, Grand Prix at the Brussels World Expo), he left behind an immense body of work. Today, his ceramics from the 1950s and his stoneware tables from the 1970s are highly sought after in auction houses and design galleries worldwide.
