A beautifully resolved piece of Swedish mid-century table design — this salt and pepper set was made by Karl Holmberg AB of Götene, Sweden, and is a confident expression of the Scandinavian design philosophy that dominated the 1960s: honest materials, refined form, and quiet functionality. The set consists of two rounded teak shakers with stainless steel tops, seated in recessed holes on a softly rounded rectangular teak tray, flanked by a slender teak handle that rises elegantly from the centre — flaring slightly at the top in a form that is both practical and sculptural. The grain of the teak is warm and rich throughout, and the contrast between the natural wood and the polished steel caps is beautiful. The tray is stamped on the underside with the oval Karl Holmberg AB mark — Äkta Teak, Götene — and model number 319. The stainless steel caps are marked K. Holmberg, Rostfritt, Götene, Sweden — “rostfritt” being Swedish for stainless, a word that became something of a hallmark of quality in mid-century Scandinavian kitchenware.Karl Holmberg AB was a Swedish manufacturer based in Götene, in the Västra Götaland region, that produced teak household objects during the height of the Scandinavian teak design era. Like many Swedish workshops of the period, they combined skilled woodworking with the warm, durable teak that flooded the Scandinavian market in the 1950s and 60s, producing objects that were designed to be used daily but made well enough to last a lifetime. The kind of thing that looks equally well on the table or as decoration on a shelf. The condition of the set is excellent. Clean throughout and ready to use. No cracks, chips, or repairs.
