A fine pair of Victorian sterling silver candlesticks in the form of Corinthian columns, fully hallmarked for Birmingham, 1895. Each candlestick features a fluted column shaft rising from a stepped square base decorated with egg-and-dart and beaded friezes, crowned by an elaborately cast Corinthian capital with acanthus leaf detail and a shaped drip pan. The nozzles are removable and also bear hallmarks. The candlesticks are filled with a weighted material (not silver) to ensure excellent stability – a common and period-typical technique used in high-quality British silversmithing. The exterior is solid sterling silver (.925), fully hallmarked. Hallmarks: Birmingham assay office (anchor), sterling silver (lion passant), date letter V (1895), maker's mark.
