A striking pair of large heavy bronze Victorian triple candle wall sconces, richly detailed and full of period character. Each sconce features an openwork cast backplate adorned with elegant scrolling acanthus leaf motifs, crowned at the top by a pair of finely rendered griffins that lend a sense of grandeur and mythological charm. Projecting from the backplate is a central mount embellished with a decorative flower form, from which three gracefully curved arms extend outward. These arms terminate in ornate candle pans, completing the balanced and sculptural design. Bearing the marks of their long history, the sconces have been discreetly drilled to both the backplates and candle holders at some point in the past, allowing for electrical wiring. As such, they offer versatile use - either maintained in their original form for traditional candlelight or adapted for modern electrical illumination if desired. The sconces are in good, solid condition, with a rich, timeworn patina that enhances their antique character. There are areas of verdigris present, consistent with age and use, adding to their authentic charm and reflecting their long history. The approximate measurements. Height back plate 31 cm.
