An antique swat valley spice box. This is an outstanding antique hand-turned wooden spice box from pakistan, with beautifully incised and hand-painted tribal and leaf decoration in red and black. One of the largest examples we have seen, the bold domed lid opens on an iron hinge to reveal a generous single compartment for storing spices and other dried goods. A matching hasp enables the owner to lock the lid with a padlock to protect its valuable contents. Throughout my research, I have seen several simular in books and online. Dating the spice box based on similar colors/patterns/size and craftsmanship I believe its somewhere between the early 1800's - 1850's. The round box was craved by tool out of a solid log of wood and still is intact and has structural integrity to this day. This piece is in very good sturdy condition but bears the dings and scrapes to be expected after decades of purposeful use. Measures: 22 cm high. 24 cm diameter.
