Journey, journey! A truly remarkable family portrait at Kiev airport in 1974. Someone is leaving, possibly the boy with the guitar. Or the two brothers with the caps and vintage trainers. Or are all five of them leaving? Sitting are the mother, the father, and the sister. At their feet, large grey bags. Behind the glass, on the tarmac, the planes. We are in Ukraine, USSR in 1974. The Ukrainian artist who signed this oil on panel in '74 worked in Kiev during the 70s and 80s. From this group portrait, someone said it’s a group going on tour. Maybe. Who is leaving and who is staying, we don’t know, just that this scene of an airport interior is striking, beautifully painted, and the colours are wonderful. And then the beauty of the characters, hipsters before the hype. Original frame (when this work arrived in France) in gilded wood - note a tiny chip along the frame at the top right.
