Jean Austruy settled in Vallauris, an emblematic village-workshop of the revival of French ceramics after the Second World War. In the 1950s, the town attracted many major artists and ceramists such as Pablo Picasso, Roger Capron, Gilbert Portanier, Robert Picault, and many others. In Vallauris, Jean Austruy produced a varied range of utilitarian and decorative ceramics: vases, pots, pans, dishes, and art objects. His works are generally signed "Jean Austruy" or simply "Austruy." His pieces, mainly dated from the 1950s to the 1970s, are now sought after by collectors of 20th-century French ceramics for their authenticity, craftsmanship, and their place within the post-war aesthetic.
