Painting - very beautiful copyist work (second half of the last century) made in oil on canvas mounted after van gogh's studies of irises (itself strongly inspired by his ukiyo-e period). Hand-made copy, quality work - this is not a print on canvas but a real painting exercise on canvas of beautiful format. Stretcher size: 69 / 85 cm. Context of the original work: the painting, which was painted before his first attack in saint-rémy, was influenced by japanese ukiyo-e paintings, like many of his works and those of artists of his time. The painting does not express the "tension" found in his later works. When speaking of painting, he explained that it was "the lightning rod for my illness", because he felt that he could avoid going mad by continuing to paint. Van Gogh considered this painting a study, which explains why no known sketch exists, although Van Gogh's brother Theo quickly realized that it was an important painting, which he submitted to the annual exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in September 1889, along with another Van Gogh painting, Starry Night Over the Rhône.
