Large flowerpot with hand-painted floral decoration of roses, made of ceramic by the italian earthenware factory verbanum stone laveno around 1900. The società ceramica italiana di laveno (sci), founded in 1856 in laveno, on the shores of lake maggiore, has marked the history of italian earthenware. Transforming an old glassworks into a factory, its founders carlo caspani, alessandro carnelli and severino revelli launched the production of fine earthenware intended for modest households, thus democratizing the use of ceramics. The company is distinguished by the early adoption of modern technologies, such as the reverse flame kilns introduced in 1869 in its new “lago” factory. These advances allowed for increased production of high-quality pieces, ranging from utilitarian tableware to decorative objects. In the 1920s, the sci began an artistic revival through collaborations with renowned designers, including guido andlovitz. The collections then became models of modernity, combining aesthetics and functionality. This marriage of art and industry positioned laveno earthenware as a national and international reference. The visual identity of the sci's creations is distinguished by innovative patterns and bold colors, which were very popular with the public. The opening of a school for ceramicists in 1950-51 also reflected the company's desire to pass on its artisanal know-how. Recognized for its excellence, the laveno earthenware factory exemplifies italian industrial and artistic genius, leaving a lasting mark on the history of european ceramics.
