Antique walnut coffee table – Central Europe, circa 1880

This antique walnut coffee table features an oval top with a scalloped edge on a central base with four curved arms. It originates from Central Europe, from the last quarter of the 19th century, where walnut was crafted using mortise and tenon joints and finished with wax. The central pedestal table was the piece of furniture that organised the bourgeois salon in Central Europe: placed under the lamp and surrounded by chairs, it served for sewing, reading, and visiting. Its undulating profile and scroll arms reflect the historicist taste that dominated regional cabinetmaking after 1870. The top is bordered by a moulding that follows the wavy contour. The four arms emerge from a turned column with a floral motif and curve outwards to scalloped feet. The carving is done by hand, with slight asymmetries from one arm to another. The walnut has taken on a warm, glowing tone under its old finish, with an uneven sheen. The top shows rings, fine scratches, and an open joint in the centre. The wear is naturally distributed, with no visible repainting or repairs. This coffee table finds its place near a sofa, in a conservatory, or as an entry table. The warmth of the walnut and its curved silhouette contrast with solid fabrics and contemporary interiors seeking a touch of noble wood. Details.
