This is an original flower vase designed by czech artist pavel hlava (1924-2003) and produced by novy bor glasswork in the 1960’s. This piece doesnt have the company label attached any more, but is documented in literature and catalogues. Pavel hlava is one of the most talented, influential and successful czech glass artists of the second half of the 20th century. Hlava was involved in various work, from designing original art objects made of glass, commercial mass produced glassware to larger architectural projects. Hlava had a great success and following outside czechoslovakia. His work was hugely popular in japan and the us. He was also teaching at the royal college of art in london in the late 60’s and we can find his work in galleries around the world. For example in the v&a museum in london, the ishikawa prefektural art museum in kanazawa or in the museo de artes decorativas in barcelona. This particular vase is from his 1960’s period where hlava was using a technique of coloured glass blown into a mould. The vase has a rich blue colour and expressive organic form. Its made of metallurgical glass with a cobalt underlay. This piece is a great manifesto of hlava’s talent to treat glass as a sculptural material. This piece is in great vintage condition without any damage, cracks or chips.
