He began working in his father's workshop as a clerk, and from 1906 to 1911, was a draftsman for the jeweler CJ Begeer, based in Utrecht. From 1904 to 1908, he took evening classes in drawing and ornamentation at the Kustindustrieel Onderwijs der Vereeniging of the Museum van Kunstnijverheid in Utrecht. Around 1906, he took classes with the architect PJC Klaarhamer. In 1917, Rietveld opened his furniture studio in Utrecht. Like his peers Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, Rietveld was quickly associated with the De Stijl movement. From 1918 onward, his work increasingly reflected the group's ideals: he transformed objects and buildings into abstract compositions, featuring lines, flat surfaces, black, white, gray, and primary colors. Among his most notable designs from this period are the originally unpainted Red-Blue Chair (1918), which was given its name in 1923, and the Rietveld Schröder House (1924). From 1919, he also contributed to the magazine De Stijl: Maandblad voor nieuwe Kunst, wetenschap en Kultur until its publication ceased in 1931. There, he built a network that helped him exhibit his work internationally. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, he focused on architecture and the mass production of furniture. During the 1930s, Rietveld distanced himself from the De Stijl movement and focused more on experimental projects and the exploration of materials.
