Antique abedeh rug with the classic zili sultan motif, "vase and peacock." Closely related to the original ancient motif of a tree on which two birds perch, the zili sultan appears to have been invented in Persia in the late 19th century by a court dignitary of the Qajar dynasty, its name meaning "shadow of the sultan." The colors, made from natural dyes, shimmer against an ivory background. This is a superb example of the type, made of pure, soft wool. The red border on the ground is of an unusual design and frames the rug beautifully. Note all the small birds in the field motif surrounding the vases of flowers. Due to their quality and aesthetic value, abedeh rugs are often considered works of art and are highly sought after by collectors and rug enthusiasts worldwide. They represent an important part of Iranian cultural heritage and are a symbol of the traditional craftsmanship and know-how of the Abedeh region. A true masterpiece of Persian craftsmanship, these rugs are prized for their durability and resistance to wear. Used as floor rugs to bring a warm and colorful touch to both classic and contemporary interiors, they can also be used as wall decorations. Sought after by collectors, they are a true cultural heritage of Iranian craftsmanship and a sound investment.
